Dr.
Bullajian is a native Texan who was
born and raised in Corpus Christi. He graduated
from the Mary Carroll High School Honors pro-gram
in the top two percent of his class. He then
completed his undergraduate degree in the
Honors Program at Baylor University where he
received a BS degree in chemistry with an
emphasis in biochemistry. Dr. Bullajian was one
of the first few to graduate from Baylor
University’s Honors Program with Distinction.
After his undergraduate training, Dr.
Bullajian’s love for academics and education led
him to a brief career in teaching. In central Texas,
he taught high school chemistry and physics as
well as junior high science. Although this was a
wonderful experience for Dr. Bullajian, he felt
that medicine was his lifelong calling. In 2000, he
graduated from Texas Tech University in
Lubbock.
Upon completion of medical school, Dr.
Bullajian went to the University of South
Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina to com-plete
his internship in Internal Medicine. He also
completed his residency in ophthalmology at the
same program. In the Department of Ophthalmology, Dr. Bullajian
received training
in the latest techniques for the detection and treatment
of eye diseases. He also received excellent
training in cataract and refractive surgery. Dr.
Bullajian was the first resident physician in his
residency program’s history to perform LASIK
eye surgery. He was selected by the chairman of
his department to be Chief Resident, which
enabled him to teach other residents about eye
disease, cataract surgery and LASIK.
After completing his residency, Dr. Bullajian
decided to return home to Texas to begin private
practice. He chose Tyler so that he could be clos-er
to family, and to enjoy many of the wonderful
things that East Texas has to offer. Currently, Dr.
Bullajian practices comprehensive ophthalmology
with a special emphasis on cataract and
LASIK surgery. He is a member of the Smith
County Medical Society, American Medical
Association, Texas Medical Association, the
American Academy of Ophthalmology and the
American Society of Cataract and Refractive
Surgeons. He enjoys water skiing, snow skiing,
playing golf and tennis, and playing the guitar.

This newsletter feature will be the first of infor-mation
articles related to the Optical Shop and the
selection of glasses. We know that buying a new pair
of glasses is sometimes difficult and indeed trouble-some
from the point of add-ons like various coatings,
polarized lenses, plastic or glass, tinted or not tinted,
no line bifocals or regular bifocals, trifocals, etc.
As a consumer, you have to wonder what is necessary
and what is “fluff” because the costs can vary
tremendously. We hope in the following series of articles
to help you understand what you need. What kind of frame, lens,
coating, and tint do you need for your
life?
We want in this first article to help you think
about frames and which is better for what you do,
because every person has different needs. If you are
working outside, perspiring, banging your glasses,
dropping them, etc., you need something entirely different
from someone working indoors at the computer.
Frames can be compared to automobiles in
terms of which model to purchase. The cheaper
frames are OK, but will not last as long as more
expensive models. Or the cheaper frames may have
aggravating characteristics, such as those metal
frames which contain nickel in their makeup, and may
result in green discoloration of the frame or your skin
due to interaction of the nickel with your skin chemicals.
Plastic frames or titanium will avoid this problem.
Of course, the typical plastic frames look as cheap as they are.
Titanium is more expensive but is
very durable and when doped with nickel can be
extremely flexible without losing shape. But guess
what? It costs more and if you are particularly heavy
perspirer, even these titanium frames can discolor. So
when picking a frame, you must consider first how
much is within your budget, what you do for a living,
what kind of a look you are hoping to achieve, and
how long you would like the glasses to last. In making
these decisions, not only about the frames, but
also about the kind of lenses you want, please keep in
mind that your glasses are an apparel item as well as physical
need. However, unlike a shirt or blouse, you
will wear the glasses every day of your life. You will
want your glasses to be durable, functional, and also
nice looking.
